Six Ways To Be Dumber

Why do we need ways to be dumber? We don't of course, but there are two basic ways to improve oneself. The first is to actively engage in new thoughts and behaviors that are better, and the other is to avoid those patterns of though and behavior that make matters worse. This is based on the latter approach.

Here are some of the things people do that hurt their brains or get in the way of effective thinking. In other words, the things that make them dumber. If you see some of your own habits on the list, you can start getting rid of your bad habits.

1. Explaining too much. Sometimes, as soon as you have an explanation for something you stop thinking about it. For example, we explain human aggression as a "survival instinct," and leave it at that. But that leaves a lot of interesting questions unanswered doesn't it? (Like why do some have more of this than others?) Saying "I don't know," may feel like an uncomfortable admission of ignorance, but it often leads to more understanding, certainly more so than having a ready explanation for everything.

2. Too much alcohol. It has been shown in many studies now that moderate alcohol consumption is healthy, and even good for some aspects of brain function. "Moderate" means a drink or two each day at most, though. More than two and the evidence points to damage to brain cells.

3. Too many simple carbohydrates. The long term consequences of eating too much sugar, white flour and other simple carbohydrates include the risk of diabetes and obesity, and possibly a decrease in brain function. The latter hasn't yet been proven, but the short term effect is the well-known "sugar blues" which causes brain fog. Eat a big piece of sugary pie on an empty stomach and you will probably feel yourself getting dumber over the following half-hour.

4. Blaming circumstances. Even if a person or circumstance really causes a problem for you, focusing on blaming or excuse-making short-circuits your problem-solving thinking. If you are busy blaming, you aren't usually looking for a better approach to a situation. Also, once you make an excuse or blame someone, your mind unconsciously starts to look for evidence to support your belief, instead of thinking of a solution.

5. Too many hydrogenated fats. Hydrogenated oils, found in most packages foods now, cause heart disease and general clogging of the arteries - including those that feed the brain. Less blood flow means less ability for the brain to think clearly and to repair cells. Better alternatives are olive oil and canola oil.

6. Mental laziness. Yes, the brain really does need exercise, just like the rest of our bodies. The functioning of the various specific parts improves with practice (practice solving problems and you'll get better at it), but there are physical changes as well. Mental exercises have been shown to grow new brain cells and thicken some parts of the brain. Mental laziness, on the other hand, makes you dumber.

There are more ways than these to be dumber, but avoiding the ones listed here is a good way to start increasing that brainpower.

Life Is Purgatory

Some people see life as a sort of purgatory to be suffered through. In fact, many religions explicitly use this metaphor. Life is suffering, they claim, and by suffering virtuously, you get to go to some wonderful place afterwards. This idea shows up in other ways as well. Some people think it is normal to work at a job or jobs that they hate for most of their lives, in order to get the "reward" of retirement.

Life Is A Party

Now this is a more enjoyable metaphor. At least for a while. People who live by this metaphor, though, often end up bitter later in life. Partying to excess has its consequences, and a party has to be paid for by someone. Having no money for food and drink takes a lot of the fun out of a party.

Life Is A Movie

This is one of those metaphors we live by both consciously and unconsciously. People will sometimes say things like, "This is my big scene," or "Is this the part where..." followed by some movie reference. More often, people just unconsciously take the role of movie-goer in their own lives, feeling like they are watching a story directed by someone else.

In one sense, this perspective provides a more objective view that may keep a person from suffering too much. The next scene is on its way, after all, and there are always unexpected plot twists that can be good or bad. On the other hand, this perspective creates a sense of passivity. Maybe it would be a more useful metaphor for life if a person also saw himself as the writer, director and producer of the movie.

The Best Metaphors We Live By

What are the best metaphors for life? Many have their useful aspects. A "journey," "quest," or "path," would keep you looking for the better way in life, and perhaps motivate you to overcome any obstacles. A "story," might give your life meaning. The metaphor "adventure" could make you see life problems and challenges as interesting and exciting.

However, all metaphors are limiting too. For example, life my be more fun as a "game," but a game has winners and losers, and competition is the rule. This isn't always true in life, and a person would miss out on a lot if this was her ruling metaphor. Even "quests," or "journeys," have their problems. They don't allow much for the idea sitting still and enjoying just "being."

The metaphors we live by, then, should probably change continually, to get the best out of each, without being limited by it. See your life as a movie, for example, when times are tough, and consider the later scenes in which your problems are resolved. Then see your life as a game to be played when you need to make strategic life decisions. When it is time to learn life lessons and develop your spirituality, let your life be an "awakening."

After working in a casino for years, I found myself using that as a metaphor for life. There were players who put the odds in their favor and so won, just as in life. Those who played when the odds were against them (most players) lost money, and their occasional "wins" were just bait to keep them losing. This seemed to parallel life in general too. Of course the "house" or casino owners always won. There were certainly lessons here, as there often are in the metaphors we live by.

1. Blaming. Blaming others - even when it is justified - is one of the most de-motivating things you can do. It is fine to acknowledge that someone shares some blame for a situation, but then follow that immediately by asking yourself, "What can I do differently next time?" Put the control back in your hands.

2. Making Excuses. Really just another type of blaming, this bad-luck habit is often more subtle. For example, a real estate agent says, "I can't sell enough homes because I don't have the contacts that others have." This might be 100% accurate. The solution, though - developing more contacts - is then ignored, because the real reason to say this was to justify his unsuccessful habits. Saying, "I know I can sell more homes by meeting more people and making more contacts," is certainly more likely to lead to good luck (success) than the first statement, right?

3. Waiting For Luck. This is perhaps one of the worst bad-luck habits. Work invites luck, not waiting. While one man waits for his "ship to come in," others are building ships. Unlucky people just wait, and let things happen - for better and worse - and so miss out on the many opportunities that are out there waiting to be seized.

4. Acting On Destructive Impulses. I met a man on his way to see if his welfare application was approved, and he proudly told me about the great cowboy hat he bought for $200. Is this an impulse control problem, or what? Is it possible his bad habits lead to a place on the welfare rolls? If this is you, by the way, don't say anything until you read number 2 again. To overcome this bad-luck habit wait a day before taking any action that commits time, energy or money towards something which isn't a major goal in your life. Do this until it becomes routine. Probably you'll change your mind by the next day.

5. Not Learning From Mistakes. Want more bad luck? Just keep making the same mistakes. Want more good luck? Start learning from your mistakes. In fact, always assume that you have some role in the disasters or irritations that befall you, and look for what it is. Identify what you are doing that either causes your bad situations or makes them worse. Then change your approach accordingly. Even better, learn from other's mistakes and you can avoid making many of your own. See how others create bad luck and don't do those things. That is what this lesson is about.

6. Being Too Critical. If you can find fault with everything and every plan, this proves your intelligence. But how will you have any luck if all opportunities are shot down? It is good to think critically, to see the truth, and so reduce risk. The problem comes when a person sees only the risk and the flaws. For example, this kind of thinking only sees the fact that 80% of restaurants fail, but ignores the other 20%. If you want to move forward, you see the weaknesses in your plan, but to each one add, "And this is what I can do about it..." or "Here's a better plan..."
